This year’s pantone colour of the year is all about conveying strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting. The contrasting colours go perfectly together, highlighting that oppositions do in fact attract and helps put a bit more fun back into office interior design for 2021.
A message of happiness supported by fortitude, the combination of PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is aspirational and gives us hope. We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter – this is essential to the human spirit.

Ultimate Gray (17-5104) – A cool, core grey inviting “composure, steadiness and resilience”.
Illuminating (13-0647) – A bright, bold yellow exuding the “optimistic promise of a sun-filled day”.
Something to always keep in mind is that you don’t have to use them in equal measure and that either shade can take the forefront depending on preference or requirement.
This is probably the most vibrant pantone since 2009’s mustard-like Mimosa (14-0848), so it opens a whole new thinking when it comes to design, a lot of which is probably a result of the home office we all put together in a hurry last year. Its no surprise that some home interior choices would bleed over into the office. That doesn’t mean, however, that you should shy away from incorporating them into your design schemes – individually or in colour conjunction.
Soft furnishings are a great space to explore with colour and keeping one pantone as the dominant can lead to some creative results.
Some projects are better suited to this trend than others but if you have the right space then here are a few ways you can incorporate this year’s pantones:
- A feature wall
- Accents among your hard or soft furnishings (sofas, arm chairs, task chairs, seat pads)
- Cushions, throws and rugs
- Other decor items like vases, frames, prints, artwork, planters etc
- Pods, meeting areas, collaborative spaces
